Field Work Completed!!

We wrapped up field work a couple days ago and are headed home to begin analysis. Just another HUGE thank you to everyone for your support. We could not have pulled this off without your help. First pass through the videos suggests that we are going find some amazing things. We are incredibly pleased with how well the protocols worked (pretty amazing since they had never been tried. Isabelle and Anusha were amazingly clever as they took parts from the initial chamber design and rebuilt scaled-down versions that better met our needs. Adaptability in the field is a must, and these two bright young ladies certainly showed their ability to think on their feet. As we progress through the analysis we will continue to post lab notes so that you can join us on this journey of discovery.

Isabelle, Kaheela, and Anusha taking a break from the research for a quick trip into Douglas, AZ for supplies and McDonald's. You know you have been in the field for a while when you get excited about McDonald's!!

Isabelle and Anusha celebrating the conclusion of data collection with a little dancing. Dancing is always a part of fieldwork when Anusha is on the job!

About This Project

When hummingbirds use more energy than they consume, they use deep hypothermia (torpor) at night to lower energy costs. Torpor is not restorative like sleep so extended use can have physiological consequences. Our field work suggests hummingbirds might be capable of controlled shallow hypothermia. This would be a novel tool for periods of low energy intake. We will use thermal imaging to track nighttime body temperature to see if hummingbirds use the more restorative shallow hypothermia.

Blast off!
