Day 3

Day three of the habituation period. At the beginning of the session the gorillas were split into two groups for about ten minutes. When separated, limited interest was taken, the only interest was from our three-year-old. However, when the all the gorillas were together, there was a definite increase in interest! On the previous days, Kayin, the infant, has stayed on his mother’s back but today he was on the ground and took an immediate interest. Every time his mother, Sidney, would take him away, he would come right back. The best part was that if Kayin was looking at the Ipad, all of the other gorillas would come over and check it out for at least 5 seconds, with the exception of the male. This is a great discovery! Off to a great start!

About This Project

An animals' "umwelt" is the way in which they perceive the world. With the use of eye-tracking technology, we will present the gorillas with different images to explore the ways in which gorillas see and respond to their world. The overarching goal of this project is to determine visual processing patterns in the gorillas at the Buffalo Zoo and expand our understanding of how they see their world. In other words, this study aims to further our current understanding of the “gorilla umwelt.”
