Mass update!

Hello all! So sorry to have been absent for so long, but it has been for all the right reasons. The gorillas have been busy painting away! So far they have painted some beautiful ornaments and magnets all which will be sold and all the profits will be going to this study! Super exciting! However, we have not stopped showing those pictures. All of the gorillas with the exception of the adult male, which was to be excepted, have continued to show interest in the images of the cats and dogs. The three children still are our most frequent visitors with their moms coming in second. This is all very reassuring and continues to show that the gorillas do not need to be re-enforced to come look at the images! This type of research is proving to be a real form of enrichment for the gorillas, which is always exciting for the public, keepers, and obviously the gorillas. We have finally settled into showing the images for 3 seconds each on a random rotation. Our new stand will only help solidify all the methods so we can start collecting data. More updates to come soon!

Ornaments and magnets are being sold for 7 dollars and 4 dollars respectively. We are selling them at a few events, but if any one is interested you can contact me either through the site or at chertofs@my.canisius.edu. I would be more than happy to send something in the mail or work something out! Thank you so much for reading our comments and engaging in this project with us!

Sounds like good progress. Can you tell us where to find the magnets and ornaments?

About This Project

An animals' "umwelt" is the way in which they perceive the world. With the use of eye-tracking technology, we will present the gorillas with different images to explore the ways in which gorillas see and respond to their world. The overarching goal of this project is to determine visual processing patterns in the gorillas at the Buffalo Zoo and expand our understanding of how they see their world. In other words, this study aims to further our current understanding of the “gorilla umwelt.”
