What is a Healthy Latrine™?
In this research study we are comparing two different models of sanitation - one is a standard pour/flush latrine to a pit, the other - an ecological latrine where the waste is dehydrated and then hopefully reused as fertilizer by the user. The Healthy Latrine™ is Water Mission International's trademarked pour/flush latrine model. It is a low- cost, durable sanitation solution that is currently used in Haiti, Honduras and Peru to provide access to adequate sanitation facilities to families and households in rural and sub-urban settlements lacking any other type of sewage facilities. This model of latrine is common in the developing world as it is low maintenance, low cost, and easy to use.
The Healthy Latrine™ was developed by Water Missions to improve health and living conditions for children and adults in the developing world. An estimated 2.6 billion people around the world lack access to these types of facilities. Lack of proper sanitation represents more than half of the sources of gastrointestinal diseases caused by waterborne bacteria, viruses and worms. In addition to lowering the burden of disease, The Healthy Latrine™ uses building materials available locally and a modern toilet that is healthier and easier to keep clean. This ensures the local economy benefits from the project, and people receive modern technology.
