Field work in Bahia, Brazil

Last month, I and my team composed of 5 people were collecting opilions in a  Atlantic forest fragment in the south of Bahia (Michelin Ecological Reserve). The reserve has a spatial extend of 3,096 ha composed of valleys and hills which ranges above sea level and is distanced by 18 km from the Atlantic coast. This region is characterized by a variety of ecosystems such as ombrophilous forest that may include agroforestry ecosystems.

About This Project

The harvestmen diversity in many places of the Atlantic Forest - one of the 25 biodiversity hotspots in the world- is little known. Inventorying species from a particular location is the first step in mapping conservation strategies. It is important to know the harvestmen diversity, considering that these organisms are excellent environmental indicators, they have high rates of endemism in the Atlantic Forest and are good models for biogeographical and behavioral studies
