Presentation to Copper Country Audubon

Last night, I gave a presentation to Copper Country Audubon and the Keweenaw Community Forest Company, who sponsored my preliminary work on documenting warbler flights in the Keweenaw Peninsula. Based on this work, I now have some data to support that strong West winds drive warblers flying over Lake Superior to the Keweenaw Peninsula. This has helped me a great deal in picking study locations, at Manitou Island and Bete Grise, to record flight calls.

About This Project

Flight calls are poorly understood vocalizations given by migrating warblers (Parulidae) that are thought to maintain flock unity. Calls vary between species but the exact role in communication between and among species is unknown. I propose to understand the function of flight calls by aurally and visually recording warbler migration. I will test if calls function in communication between members of the same species or mixed species flocks.
