ESPN?!

Well folks, there's simply no precedent for the topic of our latest lab note. At the whim of the eccentric sportscaster, NBA legend, and Oregonophile, Bill Walton, the Roy Lab was invited to be the subject of a "Walton's World" segment during the January 20th Bruins vs. Ducks Pac-12 NCAA Men's Basketball game. Bill has a penchant for bringing decidedly non-traditional subject matter into his basketball announcing, and what could be less traditional to basketball than fungi?

There are bits of biology banter sprinkled throughout the game, but the two main clips are 16:12 (cemetery mushroom hunt and lichen snack with Roo and Bitty Roy), and 1:20:13 (series of four fungi photos from Los Cedros overlaid with 5-hour Energy ad). Sadly, no footage mentioning our project was included (nor any credit to the photographer... seriously ESPN?), but we're confident that anyone googling 'Los Cedros Mushrooms' will find out all they need to know.

About This Project

Of an estimated 3.2 million species of fungi, only some 120,000 are known to science. Most of the undescribed species reside in the tropics. In 2014, myself and a fellow mycologist, Roo Vandegrift, collected some 350 samples of fungi from Reserva Los Cedros; one of the last unlogged watersheds on the western slope of the Andes. We are now looking to begin the microscopic and molecular analysis portions of our research, with the goal of publishing on our findings.
