UD Ecology Woods

The Ecology Woods is a 35 acres urban forest located on UD South Campus in Newark DE. It has been established (and since then undisturbed) in 1972 by Dr. Roland Roth. Since now over 45 years, ecological data on e.g., birds, amphibians, insects or mollusks have been collected and integrated in databases. This unique research setting offers ecologist a chance to really on inclusive long term data to better understand the challenges contemporary ecosystems are facing. The Ecology Woods was included among the sites designated as valuable in Lorraine Fleming’s Delaware’s Outstanding Natural Areas and Their Preservation.

Time-lapse cameras will be set in the Ecology Woods (UD) to monitor bird species reponding to plant emitted volatiles to locate their insect prey. (04/09/2018 a grey Spring day in Newark, DE)

We plan to conduct our project on chemical ecology of birds in the Ecological Woods. This will give a chance to integrate our data to a more holistic data set and accurately interpret it.

Examples of current research going on in the Ecology Woods are available here http://sites.udel.edu/frame/research/.

About This Project

We all know that birds have a great vision, right?

But what if they could also smell?!

We demonstrated that foraging birds exploit volatiles emitted from crop plants damaged by insects. This knowledge opens new avenues in using birds in sustainable insect pest management.

We are expanding this project to determine which bird species respond to these cues agricultural, forest and wetland environments.

Blast off!
