New Lab setup!

Our new lab!

With the funding received from the Experiment.com crowdfunding, we were able to purchase new tools and machines which has already greatly optimised our process. The new equipment includes:

  • A laminar flow hood

  • grow tent to fit the surfboard

  • steamer and insulated box for pasteurizing large quantities

  • lab rental

  • mould material for a full size board

We have been testing sugar cane as a potential substrate with various strains and will be performing tests in the next few weeks.

We are currently in a stage of growing enough material for the 1:1 prototype and meanwhile Rian (Surf Shaper) has been designing and fabricating the mould.

Rian also tested the shaping and glassing process with epoxy resin on a small prototype

.

In the next 2 weeks we will have a half board sample made to test the the optimal thickness and growth conditions.

About This Project

The modern surfboard comprises layers of unrecyclable plastic which often break and pollute our oceans. Myco-composites provide the perfect foundation for a surfboard due to their lightweight construction and buoyancy. As we build a 100% biodegradable surfboard we investigate how low tech solutions of grown materials could compete with industry standard petroleum based materials for high performance sports, which can serve as a springboard for more complex experiments with fungal materials.
