2023 Summer Research Experience Awards

2023 SRE Awardees in the D'Antonio Laboratory

Three undergraduate researchers in my lab, Carson Frey (left), Destiny O'Neill (middle), and Lindsey Baker (right), were each awarded a 2023 Summer Research Experience Award by the University of South Carolina Beaufort, Office of Academic Affairs. They submitted proposals back in the spring semester on their research projects and the award allows them to have a stipend for the summer months. We are very appreciative of the generosity, the review committee's time, and our university. Over the summer, Lindsey will continue working on her Trypanosoma cruzi drug-target validation study and then begin working on the multifunctional enzyme dehaloperoxidase (two projects). Carson and Destiny are partnered together on a very intense project involving Chagas' disease therapeutic drug-discovery. It is nice to see things coming together and we are almost to our funding goal for Carson and Destiny's project on the online fundraiser here on Experiment. Thank you again, University of South Carolina Beaufort!

About This Project

The etiological agent for Chagas' disease is the protozoan parasite Trypanosoma cruzi, which affects 6 - 7 million people primarily in Latin America. The chronic stage of infection causes cardiomyopathy and the enlargement of other organs resulting in disease burden and death. There is an urgent need to replace the clinical therapeutics (benznidazole & nifurtimox) and this proposal focuses on a compound screen to observe a hit expansion with the target T. cruzi glucokinase.
