The potential of Magnetometry and Ground Penetrating Radar

Thank you very much to everyone who has offered support for our project so far! Hopefully more to come.

If you are wondering exactly what geophysics can show below the ground, and especially magnetometry and ground penetrating radar (GPR) as we propose for Bull Brook, we give an example from some work from a prehistoric site (second millennium BC) in Cyprus. Here we combine magnetometry (the greyscale plot) with GPR (colour) to image a variety of built or magnetised (likely burning) features in a landscape, and then, in one case, use GPR survey in a small area to reveal a clear built structure with rectilinear elements. And all just from geophysical survey on the ground surface with no excavation.

About This Project

With geophysical techniques, we will search for Paleo-Indian archaeological features around the famed Bull Brook site. Though recognized among the largest and oldest Paleo-Indian sites the U.S. (ca. 12,000 years old), the surrounding areas have not been fully investigated. We presently don't know how large Bull Brook really was. We will attempt to answer this question, and additionally seek to clarify the site's age, which is also a point of contention.
