100+ Backers!

Within the last 24 hours The Kakapo 125 Project has surpassed 100 backers! Thank you to everyone who helped make that happen.

In the News

We're starting to see some excellent media coverage of the project which is really helping to keep the project moving forward. Here are some examples:

The Genome Galaxy

The Kakapo 125 Project has also been included in the PacBio Genome Galaxy! The Genome Galaxy is a community of crowdfunded research projects that have made use of PacBio's SMRT Sequencing technology. The high quality reference genome required to allow us to cost effectively sequence every individual in the kakapo species was created using this technology by Jason Howard in Erich Jarvis's Lab at Duke University.

Thank you

100+ backers is a great milestone for The Kakapo 125 Project. If we can sustain this momentum then we're going to gallop over the funding finish line. Together we're sequencing the genomes of every individual in an entire species. It's humbling to have such amazing support for this initiative, so once again on behalf of The Kakapo 125 Project team a huge thank you to all of the backers of this project.

About This Project

The goal of this project is to sequence the genome's of all 125 known living kākāpō. Please help us to save one of the world's most unique and endangered species by allowing us to obtain the detailed genetic information necessary to minimize the loss of genetic diversity, and optimise health and productivity in the existing population.

Blast off!
