reinventing the wheel, or tag

One thing that's always been true of Cetos and our group of whale researchers is when things start going one way and we need to make a change, we don't hesitate but to get on board with the new direction and go that way! It's not a small part of why we've been able to do so much with so little (publish brand new natural history animal info, collect unprecedented data on shoestring budgets, and find whales in the depths of the ocean when they are resting quietly and not moving and hard to see)... what does all that have in common you ask?

Working against all odds! So here we are with only days to go on this Experiment crowdsource fundraiser, and Experiment has kindly allowed us to drop our target to $2,500.

This number, this budget, will give us 5 tags to deploy on 5 whales. Given that we only had 3 last year and got tons of new data, we think 5 is going in the right direction and will almost double our findings.

About This Project

Cetos Research Organization

At Cetos Research Organization we specialize in underwater video of Hawaiian humpback whales. We are the scientist team that discovered calves make sounds. Now we're back to create a cheap tag (~$300) to track humpbacks. Our prototypes worked last season; now we need to make more and field test them. We can track humpback movements above and below water and map these movements to behaviors or calls also recorded on video. We share our results with policy makers to help protect humpback whales.
