About This Project

Written in the Soil explores how an ancient farming community along the Silk Road sustained agriculture for centuries in a water-limited environment. Building on our recent peer-reviewed research at Ravat (Kyrgyzstan), we will investigate ancient irrigation and soil management using geoarchaeology. Funding will support local fieldwork, Kyrgyz archaeologists and student participation, helping us uncover how this remarkable landscape once worked.

What is the context of this research?

For centuries, farming communities along the Silk Road depended on carefully managed irrigation systems to survive in dry environments. Yet we still know surprisingly little about how these systems functioned or how they remained productive over long periods.

Ravat, in southwestern Kyrgyzstan, preserves one of the best-preserved ancient agricultural landscapes in Central Asia. Its irrigation canals, fields and archaeological soils still contain evidence of past farming practices. In our recent peer-reviewed study, we demonstrated that these soils preserve microscopic evidence of irrigation, cultivation and long-term land management. Rather than answering our questions, these results revealed new ones.

This project builds directly on that research. By combining archaeology and geoarchaeology, we aim to reconstruct how water, soils and farming practices interacted to create a sustainable agricultural landscape more than 1,500 years ago.

What is the significance of this project?

Ravat offers a rare opportunity to investigate how an ancient farming community successfully managed water and maintained agriculture over many generations in a semi-arid environment. Although the ancient irrigation system is no longer fully functional today, its canals, cultivated fields and archaeological soils are exceptionally well preserved, preserving evidence that has disappeared from most ancient agricultural landscapes in Central Asia.

This project will improve our understanding of long-term interactions between people, water and landscape while contributing new data to the archaeology of the Silk Road. By reconstructing how past societies adapted to water scarcity over centuries, our findings may provide valuable long-term perspectives on sustainable land and water management. The project also strengthens collaboration between researchers in Kyrgyzstan and Europe and trains the next generation of Kyrgyz archaeologists.

What are the goals of the project?

The main goal of this project is to reconstruct how the ancient agricultural landscape of Ravat functioned and how its inhabitants successfully managed water in a semi-arid environment. During the field season, we will document the irrigation system, map archaeological features using drone surveys, and collect undisturbed soil samples from ancient fields and associated iron-smelting areas. These samples will be analysed using soil micromorphology and geochemical analyses to identify microscopic evidence of irrigation, cultivation, fertilisation and long-term soil management. By integrating these results with drone mapping and archaeological observations in a GIS environment, we aim to reconstruct how water, farming practices and landscape development interacted over time, providing new insights into sustainable agriculture along the Silk Road.

The requested funding supports the field season, which is the essential stage of our research. Without access to the archaeological landscape of Ravat, it is impossible to document the irrigation system or collect the undisturbed soil samples on which all subsequent laboratory analyses depend.

The budget covers local transportation, accommodation during fieldwork, the participation of Kyrgyz archaeologists, and field scholarships for two archaeology students. Supporting our Kyrgyz colleagues is fundamental to this long-term collaboration, while involving students provides valuable training in modern geoarchaeological methods. Laboratory facilities, analytical equipment and scientific expertise are already provided by our collaborating institutions, allowing every dollar raised through this campaign to be invested directly in the fieldwork that makes the research possible.

Project Timeline

The project begins with the end of summer 2026 field season at Ravat, where we will document the archaeological landscape, map the ancient irrigation system and collect undisturbed soil samples. These will be analysed using geoarchaeological methods to reconstruct ancient water management and farming practices. We will share regular updates throughout the project, and the results will be published in peer-reviewed journals.

The expedition is led by Dr. Atilla Vatansever (archaeology) and Dr. Lenka Lisá (geoarchaeology), working with Prof. Kadicha I. Tashbaeva (archaeology), Prof. Abdinabi Kadyrov (history), and researchers from Kyrgyzstan and Europe. The team combines expertise in archaeology, geoarchaeology, geology and environmental sciences, while providing field training for the next generation of Kyrgyz archaeologists and students. Lenka Lisá

Ever since I was little, I’ve been fascinated by the landscape. How it’s formed, why there are hills in some places and valleys in others, solid rock in some places and sand in others. And I remember playing a game as a child where I would stand in a spot where no one had ever, ever stood before me. That’s why I was especially drawn to steep hills and slopes. I’m glad I can devote my entire life to what I love. I’m still fascinated by the landscape and its interaction with people. The logical outcome is that I’m drawn to places where the landscape is now devoid of people but still carries the genius loci of the past. And that’s exactly what Central Asia is.

This project is part of a long-term collaboration between researchers from Kyrgyzstan and Europe. We have been working in the region for several years and are committed to sharing both our scientific results and the experience of archaeological fieldwork with the public. Throughout the expedition we will publish regular updates, photographs and videos through our research platform (www.archeo.kg), and the scientific results will be disseminated through peer-reviewed publications and public outreach activities.
