Jan 07, 20180
- murielHello Sophia, great work your doing. I'm very curious for the results. Where can I find them?!! thank youNov 28, 20160

- Sophia JohnsonResearcherDear Muriel, we are still waiting for the results from hormone analysis. The results will be published in my medical thesis. As soon as we have more information I will post them in a new lab note. Best, SophiaDec 01, 20161
- Anna WinekDear Sophia, has the results been published yet?Apr 02, 20200

- Alyssa LonghiBackeryay! I am so glad and so PROUD that a study is finally happening for this. I look forward to every result, thank you!Dec 15, 20150
- Karen St AmantBackerI'm so glad you are doing this research. I look forward to learning the results.Dec 04, 20150
- Sophia JohnsonResearcherHi Karen, we had a lab meeting today and discussed our further plans. I am really excited about the project, but there are many things to prepare and think of before we can start..Dec 04, 20150

- Diana G. Vegas D.BackerSophia, Jana and Udo, my name is Diana im a mom writer and doula from Caracas Venezuela. Im greatfull and honored to have the opportunity to back this project, I have been studying the subject empirically for 3+ years, my site is www.placentera.com. I look foward to further exchange and more info on the project when its completed! keep up the good work! Diana.Nov 26, 20150
- Sophia JohnsonResearcherHi Diana, great to hear from you! We will be happy about any exchange. Best, SophiaDec 04, 20150
- Denise Pereira ZanardiWill this study help answering the use of a piece of the placenta for PPH? Are there any studies on that?Nov 24, 20150
- Sophia JohnsonResearcherHi Denis, as far as I know such studies do not exist, jet. There is a survey conducted by J. Selander (see my Oxytocin lab note) and it seems that placenta remedies could influence the mood of women postpartum. Our study aims to find out, if hormones that are discussed to have an impact on PPD, are contained in placenta tissue after dehydration.Nov 24, 20150

- Doula Florence Etienne-JacksonBackerIt is such an important piece of research you are carrying out. Thank you for doing it but also thank you for letting everyone know about it. I will make sure that the word gets passed on and the fund is raised. The anecdotal data about the benefits of consuming placenta is out there but we really need the papers to back it up. Please keep us informed of your progress. Best of luck.Nov 23, 20150
- Sophia JohnsonResearcherDear Florence, Thank you for your support! As you say, more research on this topic has to be done - and this experiment will be a good starting point. We will do basic research but placebo controlled, double blind, clinical trials have to follow. I am happy to share the data we will collect with this experiment. It gives women a chance to decide well-informed if they want to use placenta remedies or not.Nov 23, 20150
- Grit FriedrichBackergood results!Nov 20, 20150
- Jules Giessing GourleyBackerHow will the placenta be prepared for this study?Nov 19, 20150
- Jules Giessing GourleyBackerAlso, will you only be testing for hormones? Will you use various preparation "styles" -raw start vs. steamed, etc? So many questions.Nov 19, 20150
- Sophia JohnsonResearcherHi Jules, Thank you very much for your comment. Placentas from spontaneous, unmedicated birth will immediately be prepared at the placenta lab for further analysis. Each placenta will be divided in half, of which one part will be dehydrated, the other part frozen. After a sample size of six placentas is collected, the material will be transferred to the food analytic laboratory where approximately 11-12 substances will be tested for. I want to compare the contained amount of elements such as lead, iron and mercury. Furthermore, the amount of hormones such as CRH, oxytocin, human placental lactogen, estrogens and gestagens will be analyzed before and after the dehydration of placental tissue.Nov 20, 20150
- Jules Giessing GourleyBackerYou may want to consider using some of the standard preparation methods, vs. a generic dehydration. The tempurature at which the placenta is dehydrated at may have an effect on what is present in the dried placenta. Food for thought- Pun intended.Nov 20, 20150
- Alyssa LonghiBackerYes! So excited for this!Nov 18, 20150
- ANBackerViel Erfolg! Sophia N.Nov 18, 20150
- Isaac OverackerBackerI'm concerned about the sample size. Is it likely to find meaningful results from such a small sample size?Nov 18, 20150
- Sophia JohnsonResearcherHi Isaac, you are absolutely right, it is a small sample size. But analyzing hormones in placental tissue is complicated and therefore expensive. The more money we can generate with this crowdfunding the more placentas we will analyze.Nov 18, 20150
- Anja LückI'm not sure how "normal vaginal birth" is defined in this context. I think it is possible that (any) drug administration influences the composition of placental substances. Does "normal vaginal birth" mean an unmedicated birth? If not, will differentiation between medicated and unmedicated birth take place? (Also, the duration and kind of medication might be of importance as well.) And as I understand it, fresh and encapsuled placenta will be analysed? I am looking forward to the results from this experiment!Nov 16, 20150
- Sophia JohnsonResearcherHi Anja, Thank you for your comment. Your are right - spontaneous, unmedicated birth is more specific- I will change that. We won´t use placentas from women who had anesthesia. We don´t know much jet about the content of e.g. opioids, hypnotics and muscle relaxants in placental tissue after having c-cection with general anesthesia. It should be as well differentiated between spinal/epidural and general anesthesia. Actually, there would be many drugs to test if you consider the medication that women have been using during pregnancy.Nov 16, 20150
- Anja LückThank you for the reply. I still have an issue with "unmedicated," though. "Unmedicated" means for me that the woman has not been given any labour-enhancing (or -impeding) drugs, or any drugs at all during labour, childbirth and the time until the placenta is born. It would be great if a placenta of a (healthy) women who has not taken any medication during pregnancy and who has had a wholly unmedicated birth could be included in the analysis.Nov 17, 20150
- Prof. Dr. med. Udo Markert ResearcherDear Anja! I appreciate your comments and questions. Indeed, we are planning to work with placentas from healthy uncomplicated pregnancies. This includes that women do not take medication during pregnancy. Nonetheless, there cannot be a guarantee for complete abstinence because data will be based on the self-report of the women. Anyway, minor medication will not disturb the main goal of the study which is the comparison of bioactive hormones in the fresh placenta and its preparations.Nov 17, 20150
- Hanni GummelBackerI cross all my fingers the crowdfunding will be successful! Great project, excited to see the outcome!Nov 16, 20150
- Sophia JohnsonResearcherThank you for your support, Lynnea! Even though knowledge about placenta remedies exists for hundreds of years, we need up to date methods to discover more about the "mysterious" placenta.Nov 12, 20150
- Lynnea Shrief (IPEN Placenta Network)I'm so excited about this research, what an amazing opportunity for us to discover what exactly is the 'special ingredient' of these little capsules that so many thousands of women have benefitted from after birth. Congratulations to the team for making this happen. We will ensure the funds are raided!Nov 11, 20150
