Translational research is making the leap from basic science research to actually using the things you've learned in the outside world and improving the day to day practice of medicine and veterinary medicine.
In 2005 when I was a final year veterinary student at the University of Edinburgh's Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies I first started looking at the research being published and thinking of how it could be applied to helping my patients.
After graduating as veterinarian I got started in research with an immunology PhD at the R(D)SVS, then studied neuroendocrinology at the University of Glasgow (UK), helped develop new treatments for itchy pets and investigate the relationship between the gut microbiome and cancer at the University of Florida (USA), developed a high-throughput screening platform to find treatments for SARS-CoV-2 during the Covid19 pandemic, and worked on novel diagnostics and vaccines for pigs at the University for Edinburgh (UK).
I've done lots of different things, so I'm a bit of a jack of all trades. My research interests include anything which could be useful.
