Dr Juan Pablo D’Olivo Cordero is a marine scientist and Researcher at the Institute of Marine Sciences and Limnology at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), based in Puerto Morelos, on Mexico’s Caribbean coast. His research focuses on coral sclerochronology, skeletal geochemistry, and paleoceanography, fields that use the growth patterns and chemical composition of coral skeletons to understand past and present ocean conditions.
By combining coral growth records with geochemical and isotopic analyses, Juan Pablo investigates how reef-building corals respond to rising ocean temperatures, ocean acidification, and local environmental pressures such as pollution and nutrient inputs. His work aims to uncover how corals regulate their growth and skeletal formation under environmental stress, and what these processes reveal about their capacity to withstand changing ocean conditions.
Juan Pablo completed his PhD at the Australian National University and has conducted research in Australia and Germany before establishing his research programme at UNAM. He leads projects investigating coral resilience in the Mexican Caribbean and collaborates with an international network of researchers. Through his work, he aims to improve our understanding of coral reef responses to environmental change and contribute scientific knowledge that can support reef conservation.
