My name is John (Jack) Morrow. I am from Birmingham, Alabama and I attended Sewanee: The University of the South for my bachelors degree. The first course I took was the intro to geology course and I immediately fell in love with it. Sewanee was a fantastic foundation for geology due to its remote location and fantastic geologic setting on the Cumberland Plateau.
Growing up I was involved heavily in the outdoors, particularly fly fishing and camping. This influenced my interests and naturally followed me into my professional life. I worked as a fly fishing guide for 4 summers, including one as the head guide, at a guest ranch in Wyoming. I developed greatly as an individual in my time here through the relationships I built and the great responsibilities I was entrusted with. This proved to be an invaluable experience for my professional career. I loved this everything about it, however, I knew I wanted to continue my education eventually.
After my last summer out west, I decided to attend graduate school and Auburn was the perfect location for its proximity to home. I emailed Dr. David T. King Jr, my current advisor, in July of 2025 and we discussed my attendance to the University and research opportunities he had. We discussed work he had been conducting on hydrogen exploration in south Alabama and this piqued my interest, although he lacks any funding currently. I found the topic unique and in a field that fit my interests.
I started my masters degree at Auburn in January of 2026 and have since been working on my thesis with Dr.King and so far I have greatly enjoyed the work, regardless of the lack of funding. It has been an enjoyable experience so far.
