Hello! I am Dustin Bowers, a PhD in Linguistics who was fascinated by language as a child and jumped feet-first into linguistics as an undergraduate at Reed College and ultimately as a grad student at UCLA. I was really taken by the discipline's application of rigorous formal analysis to this ubiquitous, multi-faceted part of humanity.
I first started working on languages of Native North America as an undergraduate. This particular project elucidating the implications of language change for human linguistic abilities has been the core of my academic career.
I am very proud to investigate the details of these languages for scientific understanding, and I am also deeply influenced by the efforts of the communities to pass their languages on to future generations. I really hope that my work can positively impact the communities I collaborate with, whether in the university or in the world.
