Artist Researcher Explorer
Dr. Sarah Jane Pell (AU) is an award-winning artist, explorer, performer, and sci-art producer. She is designing experimental and emerging practices in sea and space domains to design, embody and bring human performance and expression to new audiences. Pell is an Australia Council Fellow, a TED Fellow, Gifted Citizen, an Artist in Residence at the Monash Immersive Visualisation Platform, and Associate Professor at Monash University Dept. Human-Centred Computing. She is a Chief Investigator of a Human-Aquatic Design Discovery project supported by the Australian Research Council 2021-2014. Sarah Jane is an expeditionary artist, experienced black-water ops commercial diver, underwater simulation astronaut, and researcher producing art in the field and with transdisciplinary analog crews. Leonardo Labs MIT awarded her Best Ph.D. Art & Science 2007 for proposing 'Aquabatics as new works of live art'. Dr. Pell serves as Senior Advisor (Occupational Diving) Maritime Union of Australia and Vice-Chair of the International Astronautical Federation (IAF) Technical Committee for the Cultural Utilisation of Space [ITACCUS]. Assoc. Prof. Pell is a Project PoSSUM [Polar Suborbital Science Upper Mesosphere] Suborbital Operations specialist, Simulation Astronaut for the European Project MOONWALK undersea lunar astronaut-robotic cooperation trials, and International Institute of Astronautical Sciences bioastronautics researcher. She seeks to understand oceanic lore, extend immersive embodiment, and advance design for extreme performance.
