Hello everyone!
I've got my BS and MS degrees in chemical technology and biotechnology from the Institute of Fine Chemical Technologies of Moscow Technological University. Being a second-year student, I was lucky to start working in the Laboratory of Protein Engineering (Institute of Molecular Genetics). Started from studies of activation and substrate recognition mechanisms of bacterial proteases (proteins that can cleave other proteins) as an undergrad student, I have acquired a great interest in roles of proteases in pathological conditions, primarily cancer, and dedicated my PhD project to this fascinating field. As this interest developed, I became curious whether proteases can be therapeutic agents to induce death of cancer cells. With this interest, me, Alexey and our colleagues have shown that protease 3C from human hepatitis A can elicit a very special death of cancer cells with undefined molecular mechanism. We are very excited to estimate the molecular pathways of this cell death to know if it can suggest any new approach to selectively kill the malignant cells.
