Meerkat calls

Hi again! First of all I want to say thank you for every one who liked and backed our project so far. We appreciate this tremendously!

Now it's time for some fun meerkat facts.......

So, meerkats produce calls.....a lot of calls. Actually they hardly ever keep quiet. They have around 30 different call types that have different meanings and functions. Some calls are used to keep in contact with other group members, some to warn them about potential dangers or predators, pups use a special call when they as for food and sentinel individuals make special calls to inform others that the coast is clear.

In a few days I'll post another note about meerkat diet and hunting techniques. So stay tuned!

About This Project

Humans plan their speech ahead of time, but can animals do the same? What happens when an animal is ready to vocalize, but gets interrupted? We will examine whether meerkats prepare for calling, and whether they ever change their minds about it at the very last moment. We hypothesize that changes in breathing patterns can be used to detect and measure call intention. Showing these phenomena in animals would suggest that animal calls are highly intentional and are under complex cognitive control.
