Baja California Expedition

We did an expedition in Baja California, from May 14 to 24, 2021, we collected 14 Phidippus individuals, maybe of different species, but we don’t know until they grow up because they were juvenile spiders. On this expedition, we observe that Phidippus spiders like spiny vegetation; we only find these spiders in vegetation such as agaves and cactus.

Phidippus Juvenile found in Sierra de San Francisco, Baja California Sur, at 1,122 meters of altitude.

We also found Phidippus on Magdalena Island off Puerto San Carlos in Baja California Sur; this island is inhabited mainly by fishermen and was founded in the 1800s, is an unexplored island, so the individuals we find here may be new records of Phidippus or perhaps even new species.

Here are a video of Phidippus hunting

Here's a map of the route we follow in Baja California.

About This Project

Spiders are abundant and very interesting invertebrates, but we lack much to know about their diversity and distribution, especially in North America where it is estimated that only 27% of arachnids have been studied and described. With this research, we seek to study the spiders of the genus Phidippus in North America, under a taxonomic, ecological, and evolutionary approach to evaluate its center of origin, geographic delimitation and divergence rates with parametric biogeography methods.
