We are very excited to inform you

We want all of you to be aware that we have experienced a breakthrough in support for our research which happened because of you.

A philanthropic donor found us on the Experiment.com site. He has since made a very large donation that enables us to perform our human cancer trial, previously rejected by the NIH. The donation also has sufficient resources to fund a) our proposed animal study coupling a ketogenic diet with anti-cancer drugs and b) our ongoing cell culture studies that shed light on mechanisms of cancer control due to ketosis. We have already obtained approval from our institutional review board (IRB) and we're now assembling our team of researchers.

The clinical trial itself will start recruiting patients around September of this year. None of this would have happened without Experiment.com or your support. Our campaign raised the awareness of many generous individuals to reach into their pockets. Finally it was your action which inspired our donor to help us too.

We wanted to update all of the donors, that is all of you, for your commitment to our goals, and to your enthusiastic, heartfelt and truly meaningful support.  We are honoring the donor’s wishes to remain anonymous. We obviously feel enormously grateful at our good fortune.

Thank you again!

This is so thrilling. How long will the Trial and various studies last and can we continue to expect updates?

Hi Celeste, The trial will last 1 1/2 to 2 years. From the point of view of wonderful contributors such as yourself we won't be seeing or reporting results until after all recruitment is completed.(65 patients in total at about 3 per month will take almost two years) and then we will do all the blood and tissue measurements in one batch to insure they are all processed exactly the same way. So this may be frustrating or disappointing for you, but we are determined to insure the most reliable and accurate results. However I do believe that we will be able to report interim results of our important ancillary experiments that are also now funded--namely our animal studies in which we couple diet with anti-cancer drugs, and our cell culture studies. We deeply appreciate all of your continued interest and support. Thank you again. Gene and Richard

Thank you for the prompt response...I do not feel the wait time is frustrating or disappointing...but knowing what to expect removes concerns for what otherwise might seem like a delay. Hope you both are enjoying yourself...I look forward to having the science to back up the "opinions" I have liberally been sharing. :)

Tell me how I can help! I am 57, entrepreneur, engineer, farmer ... no cancer [if that's what what you are looking for in recruited patients] but definitely very interested! Need to find ways to adjust my personal lifestyle [to be a better example to others] AND our [main farming] business model ... for last 5 mo or so, I've been experimenting heavily, making an adjustment toward a intermittent/extended fasting lifestyle, or at least a Hofmelker undereating/overeating LCHF ketogenic muscle building [or at least maintenance] approach for an old man ... my attempt to become better informed is how I stumbled onto this particular effort ... and what you are doing is TRULY exciting, revolutionary stuff! I wish more people knew about your project ... I think more people could benefit from participating in or at least following this study and rethinking how science is typically done in America ... I missed out on the earlier crowdfunding campaign, but maybe there will others in the future -- I am VERY anxious to be of whatever assistance I can.

Dear Mark, Thank you so much for your enthusiastic support and offer of assistance. We don't have an immediate mechanism to integrate you into our program, but that's not to say that it can't be done. I'm on vacation until the end of July (first extended break since I was 20), but we can be in touch on my return in August. Best would be to give me your preferred contact information and I will connect with you in early August. Best, Gene and Richard

I am so glad to hear this, and so glad that a generous donor found you. Many of us following know the effects of ketogenic diet in our own lives, and are convinced that there is great therapeutic potential here, but are not in a position to hand out really interesting sums of money 😉. Glad somebody wants to put their money in a really good place.

About This Project

We've identified that ketone bodies, i.e. fuels in the bloodstream that result from a very low carbohydrate diet, metabolically inhibit growth of 7 cancer cell lines in cell culture, but not 3 normal cell types. Future cancer treatments using diet could become more effective and less toxic. We recently posted this project on Experiment requesting funds for supplies. We need salary for our superb technologist, as the NIH has not funded us, as they are committed to drug therapies.

Blast off!
