Almost Time to Begin the Work!!!!

Only 13 days left in the campaign! Natalie and Sarah are less than $500 from their goal. We are really grateful to everyone for the support. Both these young women are amazing, and clearly you think so as well.

We are less than two weeks away from the official start of this project. In the last lab note I described how Natalie is preparing with preliminary work at the University of Montana. Sarah flew straight from her respite at home in Hawaii to Arizona where she is doing some preliminary training with Anusha Shankar. The extra work both these young scientists are putting will allow us to hit the ground running when we arrive at the Southwestern Research Station on June 7.

Sarah has spent time with Anusha learning how to trap and handle hummingbirds. This is important, because the ability to handle the birds is key to her being able to work independently.

Lots more to come so stay tuned!

Thank you for the updates on preparations. I have Rufous and Anna hummingbirds here and the Rufous are pretty feisty - I can't imagine holding one. Good for you, Sarah.

About This Project

When hummingbirds hover they generate heat that must be lost to avoid overheating. At high temperatures, heat is eliminated is by evaporation. Previous work suggests that during hovering plumage might restrict evaporative heat loss. We will use a novel method to measure total evaporation in free-living hummingbirds. This work is important because hummingbirds are key pollinators that need to be active even at high temperature.

Blast off!
