Moving the Classroom Outside for the Season!

I'll admit that I'm not the best at stitching together panoramic photos, but here's an attempt to capture a portion of Lake Ann, probably the biggest chunk of habitat on Trumbull Campus. Across the street (far, far off the left side of this photo), is the mainly wooded Trumbull MetroParks park where we'll also be sampling. If you click here, you should be able to access a public Facebook album with additional photos, including the smiling young researchers themselves.

Our first day out dug up some birds, and lots of discussion with the students about cosmopolitan and invasive species, what our sampling methodology and protocol will be, where we are deploying cover boards and bird feeders, and all the fun nitty-gritty of the next few weeks. While they're enjoying spring break, I'll be posting their individual research proposals as well, and finishing last minute preparations. It's getting really exciting, and I can't say how much I appreciate those who have contributed, and I'd be thrilled if this does actually get funded, so any help you can give in sharing this project would get a giant thank you and possibly a sloppy kiss from me.

About This Project

"Biodiversity" describes how many and what kind of organisms live in a place. It is an important measure of how well a habitat is doing and helpful in deciding conservation practices. It also provides useful descriptive information about a place in general. Furthermore, information on biodiversity can be used to look at how similar are various areas, and which areas- when protected- would benefit the most organisms.
