The Where's Waldo of bird nests

LOWA build well-camouflaged nests in stream banks, rootballs, and rock niches. Generally, they nest within 2 m above the stream. However, during my first field season in 2015, several of my birds nested 3, 4, 7 and 10 m above the stream! This seemingly regional oddity definitely complicates nest searching.

Can you find the nest in the picture below? Leave a comment with where you think it is!

The male LOWA, Ron, was banded in 2014 by Tremont citizen science field researchers and returned again for the 2015 breeding season. My field tech and I knew Ron and his female had a nest so we searched up and down the banks using behavioral clues but found nothing. We had no idea a small drainage (with barely any water!) connected with the main channel. That drainage is where they built their nest and successfully fledged 5 young.

How important, if at all, was hemlock health to the success of this nest? Hopefully my research will shed some light on the question!

About This Project

An invasive insect, the Hemlock Woolly Adelgid (HWA), is causing Eastern Hemlock tree decline in the Appalachian Mountains. The Louisiana Waterthrush (LOWA) is a bird that may indicate the degree to which HWA threatens riparian ecosystems with declining hemlock. By studying LOWA habitat use and reproductive success, I aim to determine how hemlock decline affects the birds and riparian ecosystem condition. Such knowledge is important for conserving the rich biodiversity of the Appalachians.
