The Secret Behind Muscle Growth....& Muscle Death

The white objects in the petri dish are bundles of muscle fibers extracted from the thigh of the participant on the right. If you look closely, you can see 1 INDIVIDUAL muscle fiber on the tip of the tweezers. Studying muscle at this single cell level helps us understand why & how it grows and dies

Help us buy this final piece to our microscope so we can finallystudy how and why muscle dies and grows

This has enormous implication formuscle wasting diseases/conditions (e.g. cancer,  ALS, space flightto MARS! etc.)  and those interested in maximizing muscle performance(e.g. sport, body appearance, or even successful aging!).

Cool, just got started reading up on your research. I don't know anything about how you'd extract a muscle fiber like this. Seems really interesting.

About This Project

Ever wondered why some people build muscle faster than you? We know some people have more fast-twitch muscle fibers than others and muscle adaptations are regulated by your myonuclei (the cell components responsible for DNA replication, transcription, and protein synthesis). Thus, we believe the number of myonuclei differs between fiber types, and this explains much of how and why muscle grows and recovers at different rates between people, and between exercise programs!
