Meet Our Student Researcher - Kaylie

Kaylie Zapanta is a grad student in the Muscle Physiology Lab working on her thesis with Dr. Jimmy Bagley and at SF State and Dr. Andy Galpin at Cal State Fullerton. She is investigating changes in myonuclei and muscle cell size in response to concurrent exercise training and simulated weightlessness in human calf muscles. This is part of a larger project with our collaborators at Cal State Long Beach.

She is really excited about this project, but it takes a lot of time and resources. The funds from this Experiment.com campaign would really help her complete this thesis and get our results out there for you!

Please share our project with you friends and family and help us make science happen!

About This Project

Ever wondered why some people build muscle faster than you? We know some people have more fast-twitch muscle fibers than others and muscle adaptations are regulated by your myonuclei (the cell components responsible for DNA replication, transcription, and protein synthesis). Thus, we believe the number of myonuclei differs between fiber types, and this explains much of how and why muscle grows and recovers at different rates between people, and between exercise programs!

Blast off!
