Update: data collection and funding situation

Dear all,

About 2.5 weeks ago, we launched our funding campaign to raise $6000. About 1.5 weeks ago, we met our goal. And because of your incredible generosity... data collection is now complete!

It look us a little time to set up our data collection task, but once we did, we collected over 30,000 pieces of information in approximately three hours thanks to the magic of Amazon Mechanical Turk. Shilad and I will now turn our attention to analyzing our data set and writing up results.

One note: while we have already met our $6000 goal, our fundraising campaign stays open for another 29 days. Our now-complete data collection task cost a bit more than our projected $6000 -- just over $8000 in the end. We've now set a stretch funding goal of $8200 total. If you have the ability to share our funding link with more colleagues and/or friends, please do so! We could use the extra help, and every little bit helps.

Stay tuned for more updates as our work progresses.

With many thanks again,

About This Project

Women are grievously underrepresented in the mathematical sciences. Because publication of research is key to academic career advancement and because research has repeatedly uncovered gender bias penalizing women in professional circumstances, we use tools of data science to study 600 mathematical sciences journal editorial boards. We quantify gender representation on these boards and examine its association with characteristics such as impact factor, publishing house, and mathematical subfield.
