Busy, Busy Week!

Aloha!!!

Just a little progress update for you all. As I type our second spawning hormone is finishing up! This hormone will specifically target the female reproductive zone in 'opihi. Hopefully this will boost our egg production, at least that is the goal! This particular hormone was 36 amino acids long and has taken us 3 long days of hard work to complete, so finishing it up is very exciting.

For the second update: All orders have been placed! I am currently awaiting all shipments to arrive, especially that fancy new water quality meter! I am very excited to start testing that out and get our water in check and ready for little babies. The new batch of synthesis supplies will arrive soon as well! We have one more peptide hormone to make which we will be able to start once this order comes on!

After placing all of these orders, I was happy to find out that i came under budget! The remaining funds I will be able to use to fix burnt out algae grow lights, fix leaky pipes, and get our lab back into tip top shape. Mahalo again for all of the support!

About This Project

'Opihi are a culturally important marine limpet found only within the Hawaiian Islands. Considered a delicacy, this limpet is favored among many and can be found at luaus and some seafood markets across the islands. Due to their popularity and high market price, populations of 'opihi have become over-harvested. To minimize harvesting pressures, we aim to use novel biochemical techniques to improve laboratory-based rearing and prevent the loss of this organism.
