300+ Backers and The Economist Cover

Thanks to the efforts of Kakapo 125 Project collaborator Jason Howard we'll be reading about the kākāpō's miserable sex life in April's edition of The Economist! This excellent article covers many aspects of kākāpō genetics and behavior, including a discussion on the fertility problems we hope to better understand as a result of the dataset generated from this project.

300+ Backers!

I'm really having to zoom out a lot to screenshot all of you wonderful people these days. At the time of writing this lab note the Kakapo 125 project has 306 backers! The support for the project has exceeded our wildest expectations.

We're determined to do everything in our power to ensure we achieve our $45,000 objective so that the entire project can be completed. We're already sequencing the first 40 kākāpō genomes. Our focus now is on ensuring we have the funding to complete the remaining 85. There are 31 days remaining to raise $7,740. It's going to be close but in the words of Billy Mack "I'm hoping for a late surge".

All the best

David

Looks like you are getting your late surge! Up to $43K by Saturday afternoon. I've added the link to the project page in the comments section of the online version of the Economist article. Hope yopu get some pounds rolling in!

About This Project

The goal of this project is to sequence the genome's of all 125 known living kākāpō. Please help us to save one of the world's most unique and endangered species by allowing us to obtain the detailed genetic information necessary to minimize the loss of genetic diversity, and optimise health and productivity in the existing population.

Blast off!
