We’re Funded!

Thank you so much for your pledges. We hit our funding target and exceeded it.We can now run two and a half samples ( that is, I will run three)!Thank you to all my backers and to the Experiment folks who helped put this together. What’s Next? One dating result is back (as reported, see Lab Note) and I expect two more back by December. I will report these to you when they are available. This means we will have dates on three of the rectangular adobe and adobe and stone structures, plus the one I dated previously relating to Kino’s “neat little house and church”. Depending on the December results I may run one or two samples on other materials (like sherds or burned adobe from the fill) hoping to reinforce the results with more precise dates on samples that have stronger signals (e.g., that were burned). Of course we always have to be careful about the fill representing the scooping of earlier deposits to make adobes or infilling from later trash. This is why OSL samples from the adobe walls themselves are so important so we are dating the actual construction of the building (the last time the particles in the adobes saw light).Tax DeductibleAll contributions are tax deductible. The funds are being received by the nonprofit Jornada Research Institute and will be sent directly to the luminescence lab as payment for samples.Any additional contributions will be spent in the same way: they will go directly and completely for dates.

About This Project

Jornada Research Institute
Guevavi was a major focus of missionization efforts among the Sobaipuri-O'odham. We think we have identified the 1751 Jesuit mission among six adobe structures that surround the recognized NPS mission. I will date each with adobe wall samples using the luminescence technique. This will inform on which of these adobe structures date to (a) the Kino period (1691-1711), (b) 1751, (c) which are Franciscan, or (d) later mining/ranching features.
Blast off!
