Our main question: Can we actually create an effective improvement on all previous versions of the portable incubator?

The goal is to create as open-sourced unit that is light enough for engineers and scientists to carry easily into the field and is completely self powered and sleek, as well as being simple for others to construct.

Today, we are analyzing the electrical circuit of the last version. The circuit was hand wired and crude and the new unit will feature a PCB or printed circuit board. This is a great improvement in terms of design, function, and size!

About This Project

Waiting for lab results is slowing science down! We are designing a fully open source portable incubator that will speed up field work in the life sciences. It will provide rugged and reliable results outside of a laboratory to cultivate various microbes. This includes testing for E. coli as a marker for fecal contamination in drinking water, a leading cause of death in children worldwide. The grant will allow us to build 5 prototypes and test them for usability, portability, and ruggedness.
