How to measure numeracy?

How do you find out how numerate your study's participants are? Just give them a quick maths quiz.

After discussing our approach with the lead researcher behind the original Motivated Numeracy study, Professor Dan Kahan, we've landed on nine maths questions that should tease out who is particularly numerate from the rest.

Many of these questions are straight-forward maths questions like the ones you probably did at primary school, but some of them are a bit more tricky than they first seem.

This is one of the reasons why our data collection is relatively more expensive - not everyone wants to do a maths test!

But by adding up a tally of correct answers from those that complete the test we will be able to see whether people are more influenced by their maths ability or by their beliefs when answering later parts of our study.

We've uploaded the questions in a quick quiz below, so put your maths skills to the test and see if you can get all nine correct!

About This Project

Why is fake news so popular? It is partly because people often accept any information that supports their beliefs - even if it is totally wrong.

This project seeks to measure the motivated numeracy effect outside the United States for the first time, so we fight the rise of fake news.

The motivated numeracy effect is a type of motivated reasoning where people refuse to acknowledge data if it doesn't support their pre-existing beliefs.
