Clever Little Tricks

One potential problem that we were going to have with Elliot's flight arena was removing the hummingbird at the end of a trial. Hummingbirds are quick and agile, and frankly a challenge to human muscle movement. So, Elliot designed a simple barrier to reduce the space available to the hummingbird making it easier to catch! The video below illustrates how it works.

This was a great simple design solution that makes life easier as we transition between trials.

Again, thanks to all who have backed the project. Please pass the word!!

About This Project

Will hummingbirds tolerate high temperatures due to climate change? Many studies look at heat tolerance during rest, but we study heat tolerance during hovering. Hummingbirds produce extra heat while hovering that must be dissipated to prevent overheating. Our previous work shows that in warm temperatures hovering hummingbirds cannot cool themselves. In this study we explore whether or not hummingbirds select perches in cool places between hovering bouts to facilitate heat loss.
