Analysis Begins!!

After several days on the road (me), and a few days off (Nathaniel and Elliot), we are back in the lab and at work analyzing data. In a few minutes I will be off to return the rental truck that served us well during our trip to Arizona. A humble thanks to all of you who backed the project helping us to pay for this important means of transportation. It made a difference for this incredibly productive trip.

Elliot working on analyzing infrared videos.

The first task today was to unpack our gear. Now Elliot is hard at work sorting through and organizing all his infrared (IR) videos before he gets busy on actual analysis. Organization is an important task as it makes linking the IR, time budget, and temperature data he collected.

Nathaniel working on iButton temperature data.

Nathaniel has begun the long task of organizing his iButton temperature data. The iButtons do not provide date and time stamps in a convenient form for spreadsheets so there is a lot of manual work involved. As exciting as science can be the analysis can be tedious, but the reward is the story that emerges when the analysis is done.

There likely will not be daily lab notes, but we will post them when interesting things emerge from the data, or when those of you following the project have questions.

About This Project

Will hummingbirds tolerate high temperatures due to climate change? Many studies look at heat tolerance during rest, but we study heat tolerance during hovering. Hummingbirds produce extra heat while hovering that must be dissipated to prevent overheating. Our previous work shows that in warm temperatures hovering hummingbirds cannot cool themselves. In this study we explore whether or not hummingbirds select perches in cool places between hovering bouts to facilitate heat loss.

Blast off!
