Our instruments are deployed

Over the past three days, we've built the mooring, calibrated and programmed the instruments and deployed the mooring at the deepest part of Lake Altaussee. Many thanks to our experiment backers, collaborating scientists and volunteers!

We'll let the instruments record for the next few days, then collect the data to verify the configuration and make any needed changes. We'll then say goodby and let the instruments collect data for the next year.

Preparing the mooring. These instruments will be near the top of our 70m mooring line. The top 4 m is chain and the remaining mooring is rope, conforming to the standard practice of the Austrian Fisheries Management practices.

Deploying the mooring (in the background). Much thanks to the Altaussee Fire Brigade who volunteered their time and vessel to deploy the equipment.

About This Project

Austria’s Lake Altaussee is a remote Alpine lake. A long duration heat budget study here will evaluate physical effects on ecologically critical lake processes susceptible to climate change already observed in this area. We will quantify and characterize stratifying and de-stratifying mechanisms, surface and benthic heat flux, and internal physical lake processes associated with mixing. Results from this unique study will inform climate change predictions in vulnerable alpine regions.
