Rainbow Nursery at TRC

Busy times in the TRC nursery…we have 6 chicks in house and counting!

It has been a whole adventure helping grow up these little guys.

Our four BIG little ones: Mario (20 days) is the biggest and sweetest. Walker (21 days) is growing into a beautiful swan after his ugly duckling phase. Luigi (16 days) loves to squirm (especially when we need him to be still) and Cerveza (17 days), though the runt, is easily the cutest.

From left to right: Luigi, Mario, Cerveza and Walker. Our four BIG guys.

Besides, we have two new additions: T-rex and Gas that came a few days ago. Both are second chicks that hatched 3 days after their big siblings but they were not doing well in their nests.

Second chicks that hatched 3 days apart from first chicks have a 24% probability of death by starvation. These two guys were definitely going to be part of those tragic numbers without our intervention.

T-Rex was 6 days old and arrived with just 51 grams. He had an incredibly recovery and now is looking very good. He has double his weight in just 2 days!. Gas was 7 days old, a little bit weaker but recovering and gaining weight too. Both of them will stay under our care until they open their eyes.

We will keep you updated on how they go.

About This Project

Wild Scarlet Macaw populations are declining due to the illegal trade and habitat loss. Although Scarlet Macaws lay 2-4 eggs, macaw parents will only feed the 1st and 2nd chick, while the others starve to death. We will develop techniques to increase survival of these chicks by moving them into new nests with no chicks, or only 1 chick. Our research suggests that the new parents will adopt and care for their new chicks, allowing them to reach maturity and fledge from the nest.

Blast off!
