The first results!

The team has returned to their respective hometowns and everyone has caught up on the much-needed sleep, hence it's time for a new lab note sharing the first results from the field!

The first field trip was incredibly successful on various fronts. First of all, what this trip was all about: the collection of the GLS tags! We collected a whopping 60% of the deployed tags! At first this may not sound as too much, but a recent study deployed similar tags on 'Flying Penguins' in a different ocean and only got 12% back! Considering that study, we recon we did pretty well.

We want to take the time here to emphasize that you, the people supporting the project, made this possible. Before this crowd funder we were only able to do a 7-day trip, but thanks to you, we searched a solid 21 days for birds with GLS tags. Within the first 7 days we only had collected 30% of the deployed tags! Therefore, we want you to know, that your donation already made a tremendous difference and doubled our amount of data. In January we will head out again to collect even more data!

About This Project

The South Georgia Diving Petrel is a tiny, highly specialized, wing-propelled diver; a 'flying penguin'. The New Zealand population is nationally critical and numbers 150 individuals only. Storms are the main terrestrial threat, but offshore threats remain unknown. Complete understanding of all threats is paramount to guide successful conservation management. Thanks to generous backers, it may also be possible to assess juvenile mortality to further fine-tune conservation management.

Blast off!
