A new species to science

Often in science, several projects run along side each other. This was the case during the field trips on which we collected GLS tags from the Flying Penguins funded by you. To be specific, we suspected these little birdies to belong to an unknown species, new to science. So while we were busy putting tags out and collecting old ones, we also took a whole bunch of measurements.

That was a wee while ago now, but science takes time and we just published the official species description! The flying penguins' new official name is: Whenua Hou Diving Petrel (Pelecanoides whenuahouensis)! If you don't want to read a whole science paper, a short press release can be found here.

All of this was all made possible by your generous donations two years ago, so thanks to you, a new bird species out there has been recognized and described! We hope you feel proud to have helped with this!

About This Project

The South Georgia Diving Petrel is a tiny, highly specialized, wing-propelled diver; a 'flying penguin'. The New Zealand population is nationally critical and numbers 150 individuals only. Storms are the main terrestrial threat, but offshore threats remain unknown. Complete understanding of all threats is paramount to guide successful conservation management. Thanks to generous backers, it may also be possible to assess juvenile mortality to further fine-tune conservation management.

Blast off!
