Meet Madeleine!

Meet Madeleine!The first of our seahorses to be named from this season is Madeleine! She is a female Hippocampus kuda found on Koh Jum Noi, in Krabi province in Thailand. She measured 9.7 cm tall and you can see she has a beautiful stripe pattern on her snout and cheek. She was living in a sandy habitat with long stemmed seagrass in about 2 meters of water. Thanks to Mike for naming her.

About This Project

Searching for Seahorses & Sustainability

University of British Columbia

Last year I spent 3 months searching for seahorses in Thailand, but found only 8 individuals. This was surprising because Thailand is the world's largest exporter of seahorses, sourcing its seahorses from local fisheries. Why were seahorses so hard to find? Was I looking in the wrong places, using the wrong methods, or had so many seahorses been captured in fishing gear, were there none to be found? My future research will seek the answer.
