Things are moving! We have had continued meetings with in-house engineers and our software guru, Jake. Items have been purchased (thanks Blue Robotics!) and the Jetson Nano Dev kit alongside the underwater housing unit are coming together.

We have addressed some possible future speedbumps such as hard contrasts when capturing upward during the day, speed of data with 300m lengths and other logistical flags.

Next up: meetings with Manta Matcher and Marine Megafauna Foundation to see how they can help us with their large databases so we can at least set up an algorithm to recognize manta shapes and movements.

About This Project

This project combines AI, high-resolution cameras, and existing manta behavior research to test a program that will provide real-time individual identification and optimize underwater data collection. The results of this experiment will help us better understand manta behavior in real-time and enhance the tools and methods that are available for marine research. Because manta rays exhibit predictable movements and site affinity, individuals can be instantaneously identified and monitored.
