Water Filtration Systems in the Dominican Republic

I am doing this research as an impact evaluation on behalf of World Water Relief (worldwaterrelief.org). WWR is a non-profit organization that builds and maintains water filtration systems as well as implements a sanitation and hygiene education at schools in these communities.

These are pictures of the water filtration system:

From left to right, the water passes through sediment filter, carbon filter and finally it is exposed ultraviolet light which kills the harmful pathogens that have slipped past the filters.

The cleaned water is then stored in tanks such as these:

About This Project

World Water Relief (WWR)

Clean water is often unavailable in the Dominican Republic, and while the non-profit World Water Relief (WWR) has taken measures to provide access and education to rural communities, the effects of cleaner water on school attendance and illness rates have not been quantified. To evaluate WWR's impact, I will digitize data of school attendance and clinic patient records before and after WWR, and analyze the connections between clean water and education to better inform infrastructure investment.

Blast off!
