About to collect cameras from the field

We have had little to report on the project following the deployment of the cameras on Santa Clara and San Ambrosio islands in September.  The DeFilippi's Petrel breeding season concluded earlier this month, so we will be retrieving the cameras from the field sites.  I depart for Chile after Christmas and will be out on the Juan Fernandez Islands for the first two weeks of January.  During that time, we intend to retrieve the cameras from Santa Clara.  The cameras deployed on San Ambrosio will be coming back later in the season with the lobster fisherman who is collaborating with us.  Stay tuned for an update, hopefully with some initial data analyses from Santa Clara, during the second half of January.

The photos are of the colony on Santa Clara where the cameras were deployed.  The birds nest among the rocks in the scree fields on the slope.  The second photo is of an adult DeFilippi's Petrel on the surface of one of the colonies on Santa Clara.

We wish all of you very happy holidays!

About This Project

The introduction of non-native goats to an important Chilean seabird island may impact the breeding of a threatened seabird species unique to Chile, DeFilippi’s Petrel. By using automated cameras, we will compare the colony attendance and reproductive success of the two largest breeding colonies for DeFilippi's Petrel and assess goat impacts on breeding. Results will be used to inform future conservation actions.
