Historical Beertasting on 19th-Century Elissa

In a week, on Friday, March 23, 2018, the Ship Biscuit & Salted Beef (SBSB) Research Project, led by Texas A&M PhD student Grace Tsai, will be holding a beertasting fundraiser in collaboration with Karbach Brewing Company and the Institute of Nautical Archaeology. The event, on 19th-century tallship Elissa in Galveston, Texas, will feature a complimentary tasting of Nautic Ale, a modernized replica of the beer recipe made for the SBSB project.

In addition to SBSB undergraduate poster presentations and a mini-exhibit on the historical shipboard food project, the event will feature keynote speaker, Alan Ward, the brewmaster of Brigadoon Brewery and current president of District Texas Master Brewers Association of the Americas, and a meet-and-greet with renowned Karbach brewmasters Eric Warner and Brian Starr, the makers of Nautic Ale.

If you are interested in learning more about the project, interacting with the project researchers and brewers, and trying historical beer, please come out! We will also be posting the poster boards and videos of the talks for those who are unable to attend.

Admission ticket to the Texas Seaport Museum/1877 Tallship ELISSA for the event can be purchased here for $22.50:  http://bit.ly/olden-timey-shipfood

Hope to see you there!

About This Project

Were sailors actually ship-shape--or were they truly a sickly bunch? Find out with us! We are replicating shipboard food using the exact ingredients and methods from the 17th century. Then, a transatlantic voyage is simulated by storing the food in casks and keeping them on Elissa, the 19th century tallship. The nutritional and microbiological data from this project will offer a glimpse into the unique food situation, health, and daily life of past sailors.

Blast off!
