Introducing Artedi

We are proud to officially announce that our app has a name!! Introducing the latest application in fish identification: Artedi.

The name came to us after tossing around several ideas, from IdentiFish (already taken), to ID Fish and other variations, and then ultimately landing on a clever ode to the father of ichthyology. Yup, our app is named after Peter Artedi (congrats to those of you who caught this right away!). Peter Artedi was a Swedish naturalist with a particular interest in fish. He attended university with the famous Carlus Linnaeus, forming a friendship that luckily resulted in the posthumous publication of his extensive manuscripts on fish. Ichthyologists today credit him with the establishment of our field of science.

We have been working in overdrive this past month and for the next couple of weeks. We have secured a space at the Gulf and Caribbean Fisheries Institute conference in Panama to share about our app in their poster session and with a couple days devoted to a booth space too. We are beyond excited to unveil all this hard work!

Stay tuned to hear more about our launch and what we have planned for the future of Artedi!

About This Project

Isla Mar Research Expeditions

We are building a fish identification survey app for the iPad and Android tablets. When conducting fish surveys, scientists still use pen, paper and reference books. With this app, we would increase the accuracy of reef fish census and reef fish identification. We have the technology to promote faster and more efficient surveys for scientists, now we just have to build it.

Blast off!
