Looking forward... and looking back

Ever since the IRB was passed, the pace of the project has really picked up. We were used to waiting days to weeks at a time for emails and IRB reviews, but now there are things to work on every day. It seems that everything up to this point has been part of the 'preparation' phase, and now that everything is in place, we're diving right into performing the study.

I would like to thank every one of you for your support for our crowdfunding campaign. I've talked to a few professors about this project and one thing that always surprises them is the fact that the funding was crowdsourced. In fact, for our biomedical IRB review, we had to explain our funding source to the department because it was so unique. Thank you for your help in bringing this project to life.

We held our first meeting and will be holding another for those who were unable to make it. We expect to screen about 40 people for our study.

About This Project

As students carry out their busy lifestyles, many are turning to inexpensive and convenient drink based meal-alternatives, such as Soylent, to supplement or replace their regular diets. These meal alternatives are designed to fulfill the nutritional needs of a human, but the impact on the microbiome remain unknown. This project aims to track the composition of participant's microbiome before, during, and after Soylent use to more holistically understand Soylent's impact on microbiome health.
