Progress in planning!

To all of our wonderful backers,

We happy to report progress in planning with the Gould farm administration at the Gould Farm in Monterey and the Boston Area Programs (“Fellside” house –see picture below) for the focus groups for guests, former guests and their families. We will be conducting these during the summer and fall, at times convenient for all participants, e.g., normally scheduled events for families, evenings when former guests in the “extended community” are already at Fellside for gatherings, etc.

There is a lot of enthusiasm for the project among Gould Farm staff, for which we are grateful. We know that the perspectives of guests and their families will be invaluable in moving the research forward.

Speaking of that, we would like to warmly invite any of our backers who are guests, former guests, or family members, to join one of the focus groups if you are interested. The groups are not yet scheduled but we will be sure to include you if you are interested. Please just email me directly, Lheather@williams.edu so we will know you who are and can keep you informed when the scheduling moves forward.

And a huge “thank you” again, to all of you for your support and interest in this project!

Warmly,

Laurie and Ellen

My son has sz and he was in three mental hospitals and then went to three of the "best" residential facilities in the country. None compared to Gould farm. Five years later, he lives on his own and has a life- but it is still a challenge everyday. I would offer to be in a focus group if you like. Thank you for what you are doing. Jack Schutte

About This Project

We study treatment outcomes at Gould Farm, a residential program for people with mental illness, and have found that psychiatric symptoms and overall functioning improve significantly after treatment. Now, we wish to expand our methods of measuring recovery. We will use focus groups to study patients'/families' opinions about the meaningful indicators of progress to them, beyond symptom improvement. This data will help us design new state-of-the-art interview questions for the ongoing research.

Blast off!
