Morrison Formation clams on the half shell
The abstract on the Morrison Formation bivalves (clams) is in the review stage and will be submitted to the Geological Society of America in the coming weeks. An evaluation of this mudstone bed has shown there is a whole paleocommunity besides the bivalves. We have fish (bones and teeth), gastropods (snails), ostracods (a small crustacean that looks like a lima bean), and charophytes (a freshwater algae). Some of these microfossils can help determine where we are in the biostratigraphic section of the formation, helping compare our site to others in the formation. More work need to be done. I am planning to go back to the site this coming summer to collect more bivalves and more sediment to see what other fun fossils it may contain.
